The Whitney Museum of American Art on the Upper East Side of Manhattan is home to a permanent collection of over 18,000 works of contemporary art by some of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. With a focus on living artists, the Whitney has been an instrumental force behind the careers of many of the country's most celebrated contemporary artists. Innovators like Cindy Sherman, Jasper Johns, and Cy Twombly were given their first major gallery retrospectives by the Whitney Museum in New York City.

In addition to their permanent collection of some of the finest 20th and 21st century American art in the world, the Whitney Museum showcases changing series of exhibitions throughout the year. These avant-garde exhibitions have featured works by renowned contemporary artists like Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keefe, and Richard Avedon, as well as pieces by lesser known (though equally noteworthy) American artists of the last two centuries.

Every two years, the Whitney Museum hosts its signature Biennial exhibition, an invitational group show displaying works exemplary of the most recent and significant developments in American art. In its 76th year, the Whitney Biennial is the country's leading survey of contemporary art, with works encompassing a broad range of media including photography, sculpture, performance, painting, and installation.

The Whitney Museum offers a number of interactive tours, workshops and special events designed specifically for families with children. These programs aim to engage and encourage children to expand their ideas about art, as well as inspire youngsters to explore their own inner creativity. New moms and dads can enjoy informative guided Stroller Tours at the Whitney Museum, where crying babies are always welcome.
