NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: A National Historic Landmark since 1994, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum exhibits the restored apartments of those immigrants who lived at 97 Orchard Street from 1869-1935. The Museum's guided tours are designed to place these lives in the context of American history.

Why We Go: The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is dedicated to promoting tolerance and preserving the rich history of the five-story brick tenement at 97 Orchard Street, which was home to over 7,000 working-class immigrants from over 20 nations between 1863 and 1935.

  • Excellent Tours: When it comes to NYC guided tours, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is unsurpassed. The guides are friendly, charismatic, and knowledgeable, and the tours themselves are fascinating. There's nothing that can compare to listening to music on an authentic Victrola or touching antique household items with your own hands.
  • Gift Shop: Located on site at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the Museum Gift Shop offers books, mugs, umbrellas, jewelry, and more. Tours begin and end at the Gift Shop, so you'll have the opportunity to browse the shelves.
  • Vast Collection: The Lower East Side Tenement Museum boasts an impressive collection of historical articles, including ship manifests, census records, and newspapers, as well as personal documents, such as Victoria Confino’s report card.

Inside Knowledge: The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is housed in a five-story brick tenement on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Originally, the building contained 22 apartments and a saloon; in 1935, to avoid costly modifications and repairs, the landlord evicted the residents, boarded the upper windows, and sealed the upper floors, leaving only a few commercial storefronts open for business. The structure was not modified until 1988, when the Museum was established.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Say Hello to the Moores: When choosing your NYC guided tour at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, consider "The Moores: An Irish Family in America." In this tour, appropriate for children 12 and up, you'll listen to Irish-American music and explore the restored home of the Moore family, Irish-Catholic immigrants coping with the death of their child in 1869.
  • Do Take a Walking Tour: Another great tour at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is "Next Steps: A Neighborhood Walking Tour." In this two-hour guided tour of NYC, you'll explore the fascinating history of the Lower East Side and learn how immigrants started businesses, educated their children, and lobbied the government.
  • Don't Drop In: The Lower East Side Tenement Museum can only be seen by guided tour. We recommend buying your tickets to this fun NYC museum in advance. Better yet, purchase a Tenement Museum Duo membership, which will allow you and a friend to tour the museum as often as you'd like.
  • Don't Miss the Confino Family: If you've got kids, be sure to take them to "The Confino Family Living History Program." On this guided NYC tour, appropriate for children 5 and up, you'll visit the apartment of a Greek Sephardic family and meet 14-year-old former resident Victoria Confino (played by a costumed interpreter). Visitors will have the chance to ask Victoria questions, handle household objects, and listen to music on an authentic wind-up Victrola.
