Striking Exhibitions and Iconic Architecture at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Located in
Manhattan
Upper East Side
Prices Starting at
$25.00 for adults
Summary
Features: One of the twentieth century's most imporant architectural landmarks, the iconic Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1959. This famous NYC museum displays a diverse permanent collection of 300 works culled from the Guggenheim Foundation's 7,000-piece collection.
Why We Go: Upon its completion in 1959, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum caused a stir in the art world, largely on account of the unconventional architectural design by Frank Lloyd Wright. Now the museum, often referred to simply as "the Guggenheim," is a cherished part of New York City culture.
- Architecture: As the museum's directors are fond of saying, the most important piece of art collected at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is the museum itself. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright spent 15 years designing the building and discarded 700 sketches and six sets of working drawings in the process. He died six months before the doors were opened.
- The Wright: Visiting the Guggenheim Art Museum is an all-day experience. Conveniently, The Wright Bar and Restaurant, located on site at the Guggenheim Museum, offers lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Patrons of The Wright will enjoy small plates, panini sandwiches, espresso, and drinks. Never tour a museum on an empty stomach.
- Art: While the architecture of the museum is impressive, its exhibitions are truly outstanding. Here you will find nearly 700 works by 300 artists representing cultures from the late nineteenth century to present day.
Inside Knowledge: Solomon Guggenheim began collecting works of art and displaying them in his apartment in 1929. In 1937, with the assistance of Hilla Rebay, he founded the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to promote and encourage education in art. When, in 1943, the collection outgrew its space, Guggenheim and Rebay wrote a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright requesting that he design a museum for them. In 1959, ten years after the death of Guggenheim and six months after the death of Wright, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened its doors.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Bring a Sketchpad: Aspiring artists are bound to be inspired by the striking architecture and amazing exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. We recommend bringing a sketchpad and pencil, if you're artistically inclined (note that pens, paints, and easels are not allowed).
- Do Respect the Rules: The use of photography and cell phones is no longer restricted to the ground floor of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. You are welcome to bring your camera to any floor and capture the beauty in the displays.
- Don't Bring Bags or Strollers: Backpacks, large toddler carriers, double-sided strollers, jogging strollers, large umbrellas, and large bags are not allowed in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. While these items may be checked in a coatroom, we recommend leaving them at home to avoid any hassles.
- Don't Miss Saturdays at the Guggenheim: From 5:45pm until 7:45pm on Saturday nights, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum offers pay-as-you-wish admission. This means that instead of paying the general admission fee of $25, you can donate what you'd like to the museum in exchange for a ticket. Note that pay-as-you-wish does not mean free.

Most Enticing NY Museum
I didn’t know quite what to expect from the Guggenheim, but I was blown away by the end of my visit. I visited in early November, and was lucky to see Maurizio Cattelan’s exhibit, called All. The Guggenheim is a round building and the interior is built as a spiral, with one consistent ramp winding around each level of the museum. It’s an awesome and very modern design. The Maurizio Cattelan display took up the entire center of the museum from floor to ceiling, and it consisted of an un-countable number of sculptures and paintings hung from the ceiling on wired ropes, each landing at a different height, in one giant collective masterpiece.
Sculptures included everything imaginable, from upside-down hanging policemen, to a taxidermy squirrel in a kitchen suicide scene with a tiny gun on the ground, JFK in his coffin, many hanging horses and dogs, several homeless people in blankets, Hitler models, children hanging from nooses, blown up newspaper articles, and so much more.
The All exhibit honestly made my entire trip to the museum. I spent an hour just winding up and on each level; there were so many more sculptures and aspects of this artful critique of society’s authority and his perspective on the abuse of power. Just when I thought I’d seen everything, I’d take another step and discover something completely new. If you have a chance to see this exhibit, I 100% recommend it.

Stylish New York Museum - Guggenheim Museum
This infamous NYC museum is the epitome of New York City chic. The Guggenheim Museum can sometimes really please visitors and other times leave them neutral. Though the museum can host some amazing pieces of art, there are times when the art does not seem impressive enough to be in such a well-known museum. Nevertheless, if you are not an art fan or do not want to wander around the galleries, you should at least walk inside this museum to see the famous architecture.

Great Audio Tour at the Guggenheim Museum
When you walk up to the Guggenheim Museum, you will first and foremost be amazed by the architecture (you'll understand exactly why it's so famous). After reveling in the structural beauty, you will enjoy the works of art inside the museum as well. Though the price of admission is a bit high, it does include an audio tour.
The audio tour you'll receive is worth a listen. As you peruse the art selection, you'll get such great background information regarding the artists and various works of art. If you're interested in getting more in touch with your creative side, you could also sign up for one of the many classes offered at the Guggenheim.

A Museum You Must Visit at Least Once - Guggenheim Museum
Most people have heard of the Guggenheim Museum, even if they aren't quite sure what it's famous for. Well, the next time you are in New York City you should visit this museum. Even if you don't actually enter the museum, the architecture of the building is worth the trip in and of itself. When you are walking around the museum, you'll notice the variety of modern art pieces. The Guggenheim is a reasonably-priced NYC museum that even people who don't enjoy museums will like.
