Live Large at Waldorf Astoria
The Waldorf Astoria is probably the most famous historic hotel in New York City, so staying there, let alone even walking around the enormous property, where so many celebrities and past presidents have stayed since the 1950s. The larger than life, enchanting lobby was adorned in holiday décor, aside from its normal luxurious look, sparkling from all angles, and from the first step inside, it was pure elegance.
The staff was exceptionally welcoming and offered to upgrade the room, free of charge. Walking through parts of the lobby and all through the hallways leading to the guest rooms are framed photographs of all the iconic figures who have frequented this majestic NYC hotel since its existence, including Frank Sinatra, President Roosevelt, Farrah Fawcett and so many more.
Even the lobby bathrooms are something to be awed, with their own mini lobbies inside. A small set of stairs leads to a circle of vanities with mirrors for freshening up, and then another small set of steps leads to a hallway of individual rooms, each with a toilet, sink and mirror. These are no average stalls.
The Waldorf takes up an entire city block between Park and Lexington at 49th Street in Midtown East, so the space is huge. I stayed in a superior guest room and it wasn’t extraordinarily luxurious, but it was a nice, spacious, clean room with a lovely marble bathroom, large flat screen TV and 2 double beds. The rest of the hotel was much more impressive, though the room did come with complementary breakfast from the on-site Starbucks, as well as 2 free drinks at any of the 4 bars inside the hotel. I opted to use the drink tickets at Sir Harry’s Lounge. It was a swanky little bar, but he most casual of the options, as far as dress code. From there I hit the town and did some bar hopping around Midtown.
Overall, it was such a pleasure being able to stay at such a historic landmark in New York City. The luxurious experience was great, the staff was very accommodating, and exploring this massive hotel was so much fun. I recommend living large at the Waldorf Astoria if you have the opportunity, even if just for a night!
