A Variety of Art Appreciation

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was one place I didn’t want to miss. In my opinion it’s the most popular museum in New York, and I had never been before.  I was slightly overwhelmed when I walked inside, because it appeared that there were many directions to go, but the overwhelming size of the museum ended up being what I liked most.

There are so many various art exhibits, from human statues to modern photography, and even exhibits of interior design and furniture throughout history.  The furniture exhibit was the most interesting to me – I wasn’t expecting to see a lime green desk chair or purple, red and yellow vacuum cleaner from the 1990s in a renowned art museum in New York City, but it definitely broadened my scope of what is considered to be modern art.  People with varying appreciations for art will definitely find common ground inside the walls of the Met.

This museum, like some of the others in NYC has a suggested admission price, which seems crazy to me, but guests can opt to not pay if they can’t afford it, or don’t want to donate, though I thought it was easily worth the price.

I really enjoyed walking around the Met, and it was a fun thing to do alone, because I was able to spend as little or as much time at each exhibit as I wanted.  Just across the street is Central Park, so I was able spend time inside an awesome museum, and then walk around the park, all in one day.

Prices Starting at
$25.00 for adults

Features: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, colloquially referred to as The Met, occupies more than two million square feet on Museum Mile and boasts a permanent collection of more than two million works of art. This massive museum, founded in 1870, stands in Manhattan's Upper East Side, just steps from Central Park.

Why We Go: One of the nine museums of the Museum Mile Consortium, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest art galleries in the world, with over two million works of art divided into 19 curatorial departments.

  • Diverse Art Collection: The Metropolitan Museum of Art features art from classical antiquity, Ancient Egypt, Asia, Byzantium, and Europe (nearly all the European masters are represented). The museum also boasts an impressive collection of musical instruments, costumes, accessories, weapons, and armor from around the world.
  • Size: As of 2007, the Metropolitan Museum NYC boasts over two million square feet of display space. This means that no matter how many times you return to the museum, there will always be something new. You can spend hours, even days, admiring the art and exploring the elegant halls.
  • Support the Arts: When you go to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, you actively support the arts and help to ensure that these collections will be seen and enjoyed by future generations. A trip to this museum is not only educational, it's socially constructive.

Inside Knowledge: The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870. Originally located at 681 Fifth Avenue, the museum changed locations frequently in its first few years as its collection continued to grow. Now, nearly five million people visit the museum each year to view a collection that spans five thousand years.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Respect the Rules: Like most museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art does not allow cameras, pens, markers, food, or drinks inside (bottled water is an exception). Cell phone use is restricted to the Great Hall, so be sure to make any important calls before you go into the museum.
  • Do Bring the Kids: Going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is an educational experience for people of all ages. By bringing your children with you to view the exhibits, you'll have the chance to instill in them a lifelong love of art. As an added incentive, children under 12 get in free.
  • Don't Bring Your Bags: Bags, luggage, and oversized backpacks are not allowed and cannot be checked at the Metropolitan Museum NYC. We advise you to leave them at home.
  • Don't Miss the Rooftop: We recommend visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a Friday or a Saturday. With the extended hours, you'll be able to visit the rooftop area at dusk and watch the gradual darkening of Central Park.
