NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: New York City Center seeks to bring the very finest in the performing arts to the widest possible audience. Many notable companies have performed at New York City Center, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and American Ballet Theatre. The New York City Center is also home to several major dance companies, as well as the Encores! series and the Fall for Dance Festival.

Why We Go: First built in 1922, New York City Center (originally called "the Mecca Temple" during its tenure as a meeting place for Shriners) is Manhattan's first performing arts center. Its 2,753-seat main stage and lavish interiors have drawn performers and audiences for over fifty years.

  • Acclaim: The New York City Center was awarded the 2000 Honorary Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre, the Lucille Lortel Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award. When the 1996 Encores! production of Chicago was staged on Broadway, it received six Tony awards, the most ever given to a musical revival.
  • Architecture: Easily one of the most beautiful and distinctive performing arts centers in New York, New York City Center features neo-Moorish architecture, with glass awnings, tiled walls, and gorgeous ceiling arabesques.
  • Studio 5: A recent addition to New York City Center, Studio 5 invites audience members to explore the worlds of dance and theatre. In this highly interactive production, famed dancer/director Damian Woetzel and Tony Award-winning performer and teacher Victoria Clark show just what is required to make a musical.

Inside Knowledge: The New York City Center was first built in 1923 as a meeting hall for the members of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. After the financial crash of 1929, the Shriners were unable to pay the property taxes on the building, and it reverted to City ownership. The building was later saved from destruction by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and City Council President Newbold Morris, who turned the building into Manhattan's first performing arts center.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Grab a Souvenir: After a performance, be sure to buy a souvenir from one of the merchandise boutiques located on the Orchestra level lobby and the Grand Tier/Mezzanine level of the New York City Center.
  • Do Treat Yourself: Hot and cold beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and pastries and sweets are available for purchase in the Mainstage area of the New York City Center. Note that food and drinks are not allowed in the theater.
  • Don't Miss Encores!: Led by Artistic Director Jack Viertel and Music Director Rob Berman, Encores! seeks to present the lesser-known works of America's most celebrated composers and lyricists. This outstanding program received an Honorary Tony Award in 2000 for Excellence in Theatre. Don't miss it!
  • Don't Miss Fall for Dance: For the ten days of the Fall for Dance festival, the best dance companies in the world showcase the traditional and the cutting-edge in hip hop, ballet, tango, tap, and more. Every day offers something new.
