See the Beautiful New York City Skyline for Free on the Staten Island Ferry
Located in
Manhattan Staten Island
Financial District
This tour is FREE!
Summary
Features: The Staten Island Ferry links two of New York City's boroughs, Manhattan and Staten Island, via the Upper Bay. The 5.2-mile, 25-minute ride offers breathtaking views of Lower Manhattan and easy access to fun, family-friendly Staten Island attractions, such as Sailors' Snug Harbor.
Why We Go: There's no better way to see the Lower Manhattan skyline than from the deck of the Staten Island Ferry. This passenger service also provides access to the Staten Island Museum, where you can view a pickled mole, a four-legged chicken, and the largest cicada collection in the United States.
- Fame: The Staten Island Ferry has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, including The Dark Knight, Wall Street, The Secret of My Success, Working Girl, and the Sex and the City episode "Where There's Smoke."
- Reliability: With an on-time performance of over 96 percent, the Staten Island Ferry is the most reliable form of mass transit. You can expect departures every half hour during the day and every hour at night, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Free Admission: Perhaps the best thing about the Staten Island New York Ferry is its price: free. This is one of only a handful of attractions in New York City that doesn't charge admission, making it an ideal choice for those NYC travelers on a budget.
Inside Knowledge: Having served New York City since 1905, the Staten Island Ferry currently carries over 21 million passengers per year on the 5.2-mile run. Long regarded as the cheapest public transportation in New York, the Staten Island Ferry originally charged a fare of five cents, even as the subways charged ten (it was estimated that transporting a single person on the ferry in 1970 cost 50 cents). The round-trip fare was eliminated altogether in 1997.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Drop by the Staten Island Museum: Those traveling from Manhattan to Staten Island will enjoy visiting the Staten Island Museum, the oldest cultural institution in Staten Island and the only remaining general interest museum in New York City. This vast NYC museum is home to over 500,000 botanical, biological, anthropological, and mineral specimens.
- Do Bring Your Bike: Bicycles are allowed on the Staten Island Ferry free of charge. Those looking for a little exercise will enjoy riding around Staten Island or Lower Manhattan, taking in the breathtaking New York sights.
- Don't Travel by Car: While you can drive to the Staten Island Ferry, be aware that since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, vehicles are no longer allowed on the ferries themselves. Plan on walking, biking, or using public transit once you arrive at your destination.
- Don't Pay through the Nose: Unlike most popular NYC attractions, the Staten Island Ferry is free. That means that you can enjoy the fresh sea air, the pleasant breeze, and the gorgeous New York City skyline without paying a dime.
