NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: The Dahesh Museum of Art is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to the European academic art of the 19th and 20th centuries. This museum, which has been without a permanent home since 2008, boasts over 2,000 paintings from the private collection of Lebanese writer, humanist, and philosopher Saleem Moussa Ashi, also known as Dr. Dahesh.

Why We Go: Now closed to the public while it searches for a suitable permanent location, the Dahesh Museum of Art promotes the underrated academic art of 19th- and 20th-century Europe.

  • Under-appreciated Art: Unlike most museums in New York City, which showcase the works of recognized and popular artists, the Dahesh Museum of Art showcases works by those artists who have not received the attention they deserve.
  • Diverse Collection: While narrow in scope, the 2,000-painting private collection of Saleem Moussa Ashi is diverse in its representation of European academic artists. You could spend hours studying these intriguing works.
  • Acclaim: While it has struggled to find a suitable location in New York, the Dahesh Museum of Art was able to amass a $30 million endowment in just over five years, rivaling that of the Guggenheim Museum.

Inside Knowledge: The Dahesh Museum of Art seeks to promote a style of 19th- and 20th-century painting often overshadowed by Impressionism. Since 2008, the Museum has made its collection virtual, to compensate for the loss of its permanent address.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Expect a New Location: As 0f January 2011, the Dahesh Museum of Art is continuing to look for a permanent location to display its collection.
  • Do View the Collection Online: While the Dahesh Museum of Art searches for a home, we recommend viewing this impressive collection online, at the Dahesh Museum website.
  • Don't Miss Traveling Exhibitions: The Dahesh Museum of Art is now touring Manhattan. The museum has also expanded its partnership with Syracuse University and continues to work with students and faculty in their Museum Studies Program.
  • Don't Neglect Academic Art: Even if you can't see the art at the Dahesh Museum in person, we recommend reading up on European academic art, especially those artists active in the 19th and 20th centuries, when Impressionism was popular. Certainly it's an eye-opening experience.
