Welcome to New York City, home to the greatest sports franchise in the world - the New York Yankees! The Yankees play in the "new" Yankee Stadium which is just across the street from the "old" Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NYC. The Yankees are deep in history with an MLB leading 26 World Series championships and boasting great players of old such as Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Yogi Bera, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio (the "Yankee Clipper"), Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson, and Reggie Jackson. Modern era players such as Mariano Rivera, Alex Rodriquez and Yankee all-time hits leader, Derek Jeter, define Yankee pride and tradition. Yankee tickets should be purchased in advance as games often sell out and good seats go quickly.

History of NY Yankees

The New York Yankees are one of five teams in the East Division and one of the fourteen teams in the Major League Baseball American League. Before they were the famed New York Yankees, this franchise was known as the Baltimore Orioles, calling Maryland home from 1901 until they made the move to the Bronx, NY in 1903 where they then became the New York Highlanders. A decade later in 1913 the team officially became the New York Yankees and their home field was known as Yankee Stadium until 2009. Although the team got a modern new stadium, the name remained the same, though many people refer to the new location (though still in the Bronx) the new Yankee Stadium.

Yankee Hall-of-Famers

Over the years, over 44 of the most admired and well-known baseball players of all time have been Yankees at some point during their careers, such as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig and Yogi Berra.

New York Yankees Records

The New York Yankees have always been a force to be reckoned with in the MLB’s American League.  Though all teams have their ups and downs, the Yankees have made an impressive name for themselves throughout the years. Collecting 27 World Series Championships, with the most recent win in 2009, and 40 American League season pennants, this team has created an incredibly dedicated fan base.

Yankee Interviews

To learn more about people involved with the Yankees, listen to these interviews:

Yankees Team Rivals

  • Boston Red Sox: Any Yankee fan will tell you the biggest rivalry is between their Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. There are countless reasons the fans of these teams rival each other, but many negative claims against the Yankees regard their high player salaries, while Yankees fans often defend paying for the best talent out there.
  • Brooklyn/ Los Angeles Dodgers: The now LA Dodgers started out in Brooklyn, residing there until 1958. Though current fans of each team generally have stronger regional rivalries, this was once one of the biggest rivalries in the MLB and continues to feed into East Coast and West Coast rivalries.
  • Subway Series: Anytime two New York teams play against each other in the World Series, it’s referred to as a Subway Series.  The New York Giants (now San Francisco Giants) and New York Dodgers (now Los Angeles Dodgers) have fallen out of this rival race due to re-location, but the New York Mets remain as the last New York team rival to the Yankees.
  • New York / San Francisco Giants: Before the San Francisco Giants, the now West Coast team was from Brooklyn and they were a fierce competitor of the NY Yankees. These two teams currently play in different leagues and don’t play each other often, but there was a strong rivalry in their history.
