28 Beautiful Acres of Public Botanical Gardens at Wave Hill
Located in
Bronx
Prices Starting at
$8.00 for adults
Summary
Features: Wave Hill comprises 28 acres of public gardens and a cultural center in the Bronx borough of New York City. Within those 28 acres are a perennial flower garden, a conservatory, a romantic pergola, vistas of the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades, a wild garden, an aquatic and monocot garden, a crafts center, and 10 acres of second-growth woodlands. Easily accessible by a free shuttle service, Wave Hill is perfect for children and adults.
Why We Go: There's nothing to compare with the splendor of nature. Whether you visit Wave Hill in the spring, when all the flowers are in bloom, or in the fall, when the leaves of the trees have taken their vibrant autumn colors, you'll fall in love with nature all over again.
- Natural Beauty: Wave Hill is more than just a public garden: it is a celebration of the beauty of nature. Here you will find the very finest plantsmanship and aesthetic sensibility. It is, as Thomas Henry Huxley said of the Palisades across the river, one of the world's greatest natural wonders.
- Elliptical Garden: One of the most beautiful parts of Wave Hill, the Elliptical Garden features patterned stonework and a selection of colorful, fragrant flowers and plants native to the northeastern United States. It's the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
- The Wild Garden: Inspired by the English wild gardens of Irish writer William Robinson, the Wave Hill Wild Garden features meandering paths, a charming gazebo, and a breathtaking collection of self-sowing annuals and perennials.
Inside Knowledge: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the original Wave Hill House was built in 1843 by a lawyer named William Lewis Morris. Since then, it has been home to many notable historical figures, including Thomas Henry Huxley, Theodore Roosevelt, and Mark Twain. In 1960, the deed to Wave Hill was presented to the City of New York.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Grab a Bite: After touring the gardens and the woods, enjoy a light meal or refreshments at the Wave Hill Cafe or a picnic next to Glyndor House. Note that food is not permitted outside these areas.
- Do Ride the Shuttle: If you intend to travel to Wave Hill from Manhattan, we recommend making use of the Wave Hill shuttle service. It's free, and it drops you off right at the garden. Plus, by taking the shuttle, you'll avoid the $8 on-site parking fee (off-site parking is free with the complimentary shuttle van service).
- Don't Forget the Kids: Both kids and adults will enjoy savoring the beauty of Wave Hill. In addition to the botanical gardens and woodland trails, there is also a fun crafts center.
- Don't Disrespect the Rules: To ensure that Wave Hill remains as beautiful as it is now, follow the posted rules: don't climb trees, pick flowers, or bring your own furniture, blankets, rollerblades, kites, Frisbees, or pets.
