NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Founded in 1976, the Ukrainian Museum is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting items of historical and cultural significance to the Ukrainian people. As of 2011, this cherished cultural institution boasts over 40,000 items related to Ukrainian culture, including paintings, drawings, graphic works, sculptures, photographs, documents, playbills, and fliers.

Why We Go: With a permanent collection of approximately 40,000 items, the Ukrainian Museum has something for everyone, from art lovers to coin collectors. Each visit to this museum is a delight.

  • Ukrainian Folk Art: The Ukrainian Museum features a folk art collection of more than 8,000 objects, including wedding and festive attire, ritual cloths and kilims, and embroidered and woven textiles. The Ukrainian Folk Art Collection also features ceramics, metalwork, wood-carved objects, and a large collection of Ukrainian Easter eggs (also known as "pysanky").
  • Ukrainian Fine Art: In addition to folk art, the Ukrainian Museum boasts a collection of nearly 2,000 paintings, drawings, graphic works, and sculptures by noted Ukrainian artists such as Nikifor, Vasyl Hryhorovych Krychevsky, Mykhailo Chereshnovsky, Alexander Archipenko, Alexis Gritchenko, Oleksa Nowakiwsky, Ivan Trush, and Edward Kozak.
  • Archives: Perhaps most impressively, the Ukrainiam Museum archives more than 30,000 items documenting the life, history, and culture of the Ukrainian people. Included in the collection are photographs, documents, playbills, posters, fliers, and the personal correspondence of noted individuals.

Inside Knowledge: The Ukrainian Museum was founded in 1976 by the Ukrainian National Women's League of America to acquire, preserve, and display items of historical and cultural significance to the Ukrainian people. In 2005, the Museum moved into a new building designed by Ukrainian-American architect George Sawicki and funded chiefly by the Ukrainian-American community.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Indulge Your Inner Numismatist: The Ukrainian Museum features a vast coin collection that includes a 9th-century silver hryvnia, 16th century coins, and Ukrainian currency from the early 20th century to the present.
  • Do Bring the Kids: Children as well as adults will enjoy the fascinating folk art exhibitions at the Ukrainian Museum. We recommend bringing the kids along for a fun and educational experience.
  • Don't Forget a Souvenir: The Ukrainian Museum Gift Shop features books, CDs, DVDs, jewelry, posters, teddy bears, and Ukrainian Easter eggs. Be sure to pick out a few gifts for your friends and family back home.
  • Don't Go Broke: Unlike most Manhattan museums, which charge upwards of $15 for adult admission, the Ukrainian Museum charges only $8 for a single adult ticket. Students and seniors receive extra discounts, so you can be sure that a visit to the museum won't break the bank.
