NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Founded in 1968, the Studio Museum in Harlem was the first American contemporary art museum dedicated to the art of African-Americans. Widely regarded as one of Harlem's finest cultural institutions, the Museum now specializes in 19th- and 20th-century art, as well as the work of artists of African descent.

Why We Go: The Studio Museum Harlem boasts a permanent collection of over 1,700 works of art representing more than 400 artists. The collection spans 200 years of history and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, watercolors, photographs, videos, and mixed-media installations.

  • James Van Der Zee: The Studio Museum is proud to display the works of prolific African-American photographer James Van Der Zee. A prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Van Der Zee took over 75,000 pictures of the vibrant Harlem community from 1906 to 1984.
  • Relevance: The Studio Museum has managed to remain a significant cultural institution for over forty years because it has continued to showcase works that address issues for contemporary artists of African descent.
  • Support the Arts: By patronizing the Studio Museum, you support the arts by way of the Studio's Artist-in-Residence program, which, as of 2010, has helped 90 talented Latino and African artists to successful careers.

Inside Knowledge: The Studio Museum was founded in 1968 in a rented loft on Fifth Avenue and 125th Street. Since its inception, it has fostered the careers of numerous black artists with its Artist-in-Residence program, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Go on Sunday: Admission to the Studio Museum is free on Sunday, thanks to the generous support of Target.
  • Do Check Out the Studio Blog: Can't get enough of the Studio Museum? Check out the Studio Museum blog, where the artists themselves post their thoughts about art.
  • Don't Break the Bank: Unlike most museums in Manhattan, which charge up to $20 for a single general admission ticket, the Studio Museum in Harlem charges only $7 for adult admission. Children under 12 get in free.
  • Don't Forget to Shop: After viewing the art at the Studio Museum, be sure to drop by the on-site store, where you can purchase quality books and catalogues and other exciting products that examine the art produced by those of African descent.
