Free Tours of the Most Powerful Bank in the World at the Federal Reserve NY

Located in

Manhattan

Financial District

This tour is FREE!

NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: One of the 12 regional Reserve Banks of the Federal Reserve System (also known as "the Fed"), the Federal Reserve NY works to assure the safety, stability, and vitality of our economic and financial systems. Visitors may tour the bank's underground vault, purportedly the largest gold repository in the world, and study more than 800 coins and medals from the American Numismatic Society. All tours of this NYC bank are free.

Why We Go: The Federal Reserve NY is one of the world's most powerful banks. While this in itself is a good reason to tour the bank, a more compelling reason is the price of admission: absolutely free.

  • The Gold Vault: Undeniably the most exciting exhibit at the Federal Reserve NY, the Federal Reserve Gold Vault rests 50 feet below sea level, on the solid the bedrock of Manhattan. Protected by a 90-ton door, the vault contains 7,000 metric tons of gold bullion (worth about $270 billion as of 2010), about 98% of which belongs to foreign nations. Reservations are required for this NYC guided tour.
  • Drachmas, Doubloons, and Dollars: This fascinating exhibit, sponsored by the Federal Reserve NY and the American Numismatic Society, explores the history of the world's most valuable coins. Never before have the Society's more than 800 coins and medals been displayed in a single place for the viewing public.
  • FedWorks: Visitors of the Federal Reserve NY will particularly enjoy the FedWorks: Money, Banking, and the Federal Reserve System exhibit, which features interactive monetary policy simulations. This free multimedia exhibit is both fun and highly educational.

Inside Knowledge: Located in the Financial District of Manhattan, the Federal Reserve NY was founded in 1914 to implement monetary policy and conduct open market operations. The Federal Reserve NY is also responsible for carrying out exchange rate policy. Its current president is William C. Dudley.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Make Reservations: For security purposes, and to accommodate the large crowds of people hoping to glimpse $300 billion in gold, the Federal Reserve NY does not allow visitors without reservations or groups of more than 30 people at one time. Be sure to place reservations before you arrive.
  • Do Arrive Early: To accommodate for a security screening, arrive at least 20 minutes before your tour of the Federal Reserve NY. If you have to cancel a tour, notify the bank, so that they can accommodate other visitors.
  • Don't Bring the Kids: While children age 16 and over are allowed to visit the Federal Reserve NY, most of the exhibits are geared towards adult interests; high school students, especially those inclined to politics, may find the gold vault exciting and the exhibits on monetary policy interesting, but, generally speaking, this is a tour best enjoyed by adults.
  • Don't Bring Your Camera: Cameras and camera phones are not allowed in the Federal Reserve NY. Locked closets are provided for those visitors with cameras, briefcases, and other packages; however, we recommend leaving these items at home.
