NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: NYC City Hall Park is a small but enjoyable park that is located in downtown Manhattan. The park has plenty of history dating back to the late 1600s. City Hall Park NY also features City Hall, which is located in the center of the park.

Why We Go: NYC City Hall Park is a free park in NYC that all visitors can enjoy during all hours of the day.

  • Free: Visiting parks in New York City can be great free things to do in Manhattan, and the NYC City Hall Park is no exception. It's green, it's beautiful, and it's a wonderful break from the sea of concrete surrounding it.
  • City Hall: You may not want to visit City Hall, but the building in NY City Hall Park has some wonderful architecture for you to check out if you are just going on a stroll through the park area.
  • Historical: NYC City Hall Park has been the site of many different things in New York City. The spot has served as a prison, and execution ground, and a post office among other things.

Inside Knowledge: The NYC City Hall Park was originally a pasture for animals in the late 1600s. From there, it went from a pasture to a prison and execution ground in the mid 1700s, and then became the location for City Hall in the 1800s.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Enjoy For a Few Minutes: As a break from the hustle of the downtown Manhattan area, NYC City Hall Park is a breath of fresh air- literally. Enjoy a quick stroll through the park with a cup of coffee if you need a break in the area.
  • Do Check out City Hall: City Hall may not be your main destination when you visit the park, but the architecture, like many landmarks in New York City, is still worth checking out if you have the time.
  • Don't Expect a Run-Down Park: Mayor Giuliani had NYC City Hall Park renovated in the late 1990s. Expect this part to be revamped and healthy when you enjoy it.
  • Don't Go Everywhere: Some parts of NYC City Hall Park are closed off. You won't be able to get near every spot, but enjoy what you can walk through.
