NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: First opened in 1968 as the "Flushing Meadows Zoo," the five-acre Queens Zoo was reopened in 1992 after a four-year, $16 million renovation, redesign, and reconceptualization. Cougars, California sea lions, coyotes, owls, lynx, pudu, thick-billed parrots, alligators, Roosevelt elk, sandhill cranes, and bald eagles are all on display at this charming zoo in New York City.

Why We Go: A fixture in New York since 1968, the Queens Zoo is home to animals native to the Americas. It is, at present, the only one of the five zoos in New York to exhibit Spectacled Bears.

  • Size: Comprising just five acres of naturalistic habitats, the Queens Zoo is considerably smaller than its 265-acre counterpart in the Bronx. There are, however, advantages to its small size: you won't tire yourself walking from exhibit to exhibit, and you'll have the chance to see most or all of the animals in one day.
  • Location: Another nice thing about the Queens Zoo is its location. Because it lies in New York City's Queens borough, and not in Manhattan, you won't have to deal with huge crowds of tourists and Manhattan prices. This alone makes the experience worthwhile.
  • Petting Zoo: One of the best things about the Queens Zoo is its petting zoo, where visitors can pet and feed live animals. Both children and adults, especially those from big cities, will enjoy this experience.

Inside Knowledge: Located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, on the site of the 1964 New York World's Fair, the Queens Zoo is operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Say Hello to a Sea Lion: Pinniped lovers will be pleased to learn that the Queens Zoo features a special sea lion feeding demonstration. Here you will have the chance to watch your favorite eared seals bark, dive, and catch fish on the fly.
  • Do Grab a Bite: While walking the Queens Zoo, you might work up an appetite. Be sure to drop by the cafe for a tasty snack and a refreshing soda.
  • Don't Put a Hole in Your Wallet: Because the Queens Zoo is located in the Queens borough of New York City, and not in Manhattan, admission is only $8 for adults and $5 for children. Visiting the zoo is a fun and inexpensive way to spend an afternoon.
  • Don't Forget the Farm Animals: When you visit the Queens Zoo NYC, be sure to drop by the petting zoo to visit with domestic animals. Here you will have the chance to befriend Flemish giant rabbits, hairy Highland cows, and cashmere goats. Kids will love it!
