NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Comprising 265 acres of park lands and naturalistic habitats, the Bronx Zoo is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States. The zoo's 4,000 animals are housed in both indoor and outdoor exhibits arranged by taxonomy and geography.

Why We Go: When the Bronx Zoo (originally called the New York Zoological Park) first opened in 1899, it featured only 843 animals in 22 exhibits. As of 2010, the zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals of 650 species, many of which are endangered or threatened.

  • African Plains: The African Plains exhibit at the Bronx Zoo allows visitors to walk past lions, storks, zebras, gazelles, and African wild dogs. Visitors may also glimpse giraffes and the three adorable lion cubs born in January 2010.
  • Jungle World: Jungle World is an indoor tropical jungle exhibit home to almost 800 animals. Here, visitors of the Bronx Zoo will have the chance to view otters, gibbons, and a tapir. Stag beetles, scorpions, and fire-bellied toads may be seen behind glass.
  • Monorail: The Wild Asia Monorail passes through 40 acres of mud wallows, pastures, forests, and riverbanks, allowing visitors to view tigers, elephants, rhinos, and wild horses in their natural habitats.

Inside Knowledge: The Bronx Zoo is managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). A fixture in New York since 1899, the Bronx Zoo features both indoor and outdoor exhibits, most of which are arranged either by taxonomy or geography.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Attend the Bee-Eater Buffet: When you tour the Bronx Zoo, be sure to time your visit so that you can watch the daily feeding of the white-throated bee-eaters. At 2:45pm in the World of Birds, these acrobatic and colorful birds hunt live crickets on the wing, dazzling audiences with their impressive aerial stunts.
  • Do Drop by the Monkey House: Each day at 2:30pm, a training demonstration is held at the Monkey House in the Bronx Zoo. There, visitors will have the chance to watch zoo keepers work with primates on various behaviors.
  • Don't Miss the Bug Carousel: If you have kids, be sure to drop by the Bug Carousel at the Bronx Zoo. There, youngsters will have the chance to ride aboard a bright green grasshopper, a sleek praying mantis, and other giant bugs.
  • Don't Put a Hole in Your Wallet: Those who are exploring New York on a budget will be pleased to learn that the Bronx Zoo offers free admission on Wednesdays (donations, of course, are gladly accepted). Note, however, that because admission is free, the zoo is often crowded on this day of the week.
