Summary
Features: Declared a National Historic Landmark in 2000, The Stonewall Inn NYC is a lively gay bar located in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Long a haven for the LGBT community, the bar first achieved notoriety in 1969, when a series of violent demonstrations (known as the "Stonewall riots") broke out in response to a police raid that targeted the bar's gay patrons.
Why We Go: While you may have read about The Stonewall Inn NYC at some point in your life, you'll find that written accounts do no justice to this legendary gay bar in NYC. When you step inside, you'll feel yourself on hallowed ground - the very birthplace of the gay liberation movement. Of course, like any history lesson, your experience will be much more enjoyable with a few strong drinks.
- Cheap Drinks: The Stonewall Inn NYC may be a historical landmark, but its prices are extremely reasonable. The cheap, strong drinks and casual atmosphere make this gay bar in NYC a must-see.
- Cool Music: There's always a familiar tune playing at The Stonewall NYC. If you feel inclined to dance, shimmy and shake your way up to the second story, where there's a lively dance floor.
- Open Late: The Stonewall Inn stays open every morning until 4am. That means all you night owls and party animals will have a cool place to drink, dance, and socialize almost all night long. In fact, the party doesn't even begin until 1am!
Inside Knowledge: Stonewall NYC often hosts drag shows, karaoke, cabaret, and strip shows, in addition to local music artists. Private parties may also be accommodated.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Be Fashionably Late: While you might want to enjoy happy hour in the early evening, you'll find that The Stonewall NYC doesn't become truly alive until after 1am. We recommend showing up late if you want to enjoy the party in full swing.
- Do Have a Drink (or Three): Drinks are cheap and strong at The Stonewall Inn NYC. Don't hesitate to order another vodka-and-cranberry (just don't forget to hydrate yourself- drink plenty of water!).
- Don't Forget Your Friends: The Stonewall Inn NYC is a great place to drink, dance, and socialize. To make the most of the night, we recommend bringing a few friends (but then again, you won't have too much trouble making new ones!).
- Don't Wear Formal Attire: The Stonewall Inn NYC cultivates a casual bar atmosphere. No need to dress up as if for a posh nightclub. That is, unless you want to.
