NYCTourist Travel Info

Features: Widely regarded as the oldest continuously operating gay bar in NYC, Julius NY is a small, inexpensive tavern located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. The bar is mostly recognized for the "Sip-In" staged there in 1966 to promote gay rights, an event that preceded the Stonewall riots by three years.

Why We Go: Like the nearby Stonewall Inn, Julius NY is a monument to the modern gay liberation movement in NYC. The bar retains its casual charm, with cheap, strong drinks and a classic jukebox playing throwback hits.

  • Gay Rights History: Julius NY played an important role in the gay liberation movement of the mid-twentieth century. At a time when gays were refused service at bars on the assumption that they were "disorderly," a number of openly gay men staged a "Sip-In" at the Julius Bar NYC to protest injustice and promote tolerance.
  • Great Food: If you visit Julius Bar NYC, you must try the food. Sate your appetite with a delicious hamburger and fries. Wash it down with a $3 beer. You'll be glad you did!
  • Mattachine: Every month, Julius NY holds a party called "Mattachine" (named after the homophile "Mattachine Society," who organized the protest in the late '60s) to celebrate the victory of the gay liberation movement.

Inside Knowledge: According to local sources, Julius NY was the favorite hangout for legendary writers Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams and influential ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Visit on a Sunday: If you're thinking about checking out Julius Bar NYC, do yourself a favor and visit on a Sunday: all day long, you'll enjoy half-price beer.
  • Do Look for Julius NY on Film: Julius has been featured in several classic NYC movies, including Boys in the Band and Next Stop Greenwich Village. Be sure to check these films out!
  • Don't Miss Happy Hour: Happy hour at Julius Bar NYC lasts from 4pm-9pm on Monday through Saturday. Don't miss half-price well drinks and beer!
  • Don't Expect an Upscale Bar: There's no denying it: Julius NY is a dive bar. If you like hole-in-the-wall places with a great atmosphere and cheap drinks, Julius Bar NYC is for you.
