Summary
Features: "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" takes a look behind the life of the chart-topping music legend. It traces her humble beginnings as a simple Brooklyn teenager through her struggles to become one of the most famous solo acts in music history. This Broadway show opened in January 2014 and has taken the community by storm. It is most popular for its soundtrack, which has spanned an entire generation. The show was based on the book written by Douglas McGrath and contains the same quips and language McGrath used to depict King's life. Anyone who loved "Jersey Boys" or "Motown" should not miss "Beautiful." Carole King fans will leave learning something new and non-fans will walk away with an appreciation of her accomplishments and music.
Why We Go: The songs of Carole King are some of the most well-know of all times. However, few people know anything about her private life. Relatively new to Broadway, "Beautiful" has entertained numerous audiences with its score of toe-tapping hits. With each performance, guests are treated to a look into Carole King's life and the events that led to the creation of her "Beautiful" music.
The lead actress Jessie Mueller has received extremely positive feedback for her Broadway roles. In "Beautiful," she shines as Carole King. Mueller masters the tenderness and sensitivity of a young musician and transforms into a singing sensation before the eyes of the audience.
The audience is treated to a wide genre of music. "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" evokes a sensitive side of King that is extremely moving. Earlier collaborations with her husband Gerry Goffin are also part of the show. "I Feel the Earth Move" is a classic 70s anthem that always gets the audience singing. Besides King's hits, the show includes bonus tracks from Carol's best friends. Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann were the songwriting team behind "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" and "On Broadway," two songs included in the score.
Inside Knowledge: The entry to the theater has no steps, and the recently upgraded facility provides an elevator, so the venue is wheelchair accessible. For hearing impaired patrons, assisted listening devices are available with a valid ID.
